What is Natural Breast Augmentation (Fat Transfer)?

Natural breast augmentation uses injections of your own fat to increase the volume of your breasts. Also called fat transfer breast augmentation, this procedure uses only autologous (from the same person) fat, making it a more natural alternative to breast implants. A special liposuction method removes fat from problem areas, and the harvested fat is then purified and used as a fat graft to augment the breasts.

Artificial breast implants are very effective at increasing breast volume, but unfortunately, they can produce unnatural-looking results, especially if done too aggressively. Breast implants can have an overly rounded appearance with sharp edges between the implant and the surrounding chest wall. They also have the risk of complications and may need to be replaced later in life. Many women prefer more natural-looking results without the potential complications of silicone or saline implants.

With natural breast augmentation, fat grafting increases breast volume and tapers the areas surrounding the breasts. This fat transfer procedure can even be used to improve the appearance of existing breast implants, such as adding cleavage or improving shape.

Natural breast augmentation is a two-step procedure. First, Dr. Langdon uses the Body-Jet liposuction system to remove unwanted fat from areas such as the thighs and abdomen. A special Lipo-Collector system is used to purify the fat tissue. He then strategically injects the processed fat into the breasts for permanent augmentation. This procedure typically takes two to four hours under local anesthesia.

In any fat grafting procedure, the harvested fat must be of the highest quality. During liposuction, the Body-Jet system delivers controlled bursts of salt water and local anesthetic solution directly to fat tissue. This water jet gently “washes out” fatty tissue in separated clumps of fat cells (including the beneficial stem cells within the fat tissue).

These aspirated fat clumps are suctioned into the Lipo-Collector, a sterile container that gently washes and purifies the cells. The purified fat tissue is then transferred to syringes, which Dr. Langdon uses to place the tissue in the recipient’s breasts.

Fat (adipose) tissue is the body’s richest source of adult stem cells. When fat tissue is transplanted during natural breast augmentation, these stem cells are essential in supporting the grafted fat because they need a good blood supply in their new location. The gentle extraction process of the Body-Jet system assures that both healthy fat cells and adipose-derived stem cells are successfully transferred to the recipient site.

Recovery from breast fat transfer is typically faster than breast augmentation with implants. Most patients only need a few days off work after natural breast augmentation.

You can expect swelling, bruising, and soreness in your breasts and at the liposuction donor site. Dr. Langdon will give you instructions for managing any discomfort and using pain medications. Any tenderness should subside within a few days, and bruising and swelling will fade over a few weeks.

Though you can resume most daily activities within a week, you’ll need to wait longer for strenuous exercise. You should avoid heavy lifting, cardio, and pressure on your breasts for approximately one month after the procedure. Dr. Langdon will give you detailed instructions and tell you when you can resume all your regular activities.

Swelling will initially obscure your results after fat transfer breast augmentation. Additionally, not all the fat that is transferred will remain in its new location. Transferred fat that remains after six months is typically permanent.

Fat transfer results are long-lasting. Your natural breast augmentation results should be permanent with a healthy lifestyle and weight management. However, weight fluctuations can affect the transferred fat, so maintaining a stable weight is essential for long-term results.

Women who want to enhance the size and shape of their breasts but prefer a more natural look make good candidates for fat-transfer breast augmentation. Fat grafting is especially beneficial for those with areas of unwanted fat that are candidates for liposuction to reduce these areas. Women who want a more dramatic increase in breast volume or lack adequate donor fat would be better candidates for breast implants.
