Where Can Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) Be Used?
July 12, 2020
Plasma is a component of your blood that includes platelets, tiny cells that help the blood to clot. Platelets also contain proteins called growth factors that stimulate cell growth. When the plasma is isolated from your blood and concentrated, you have platelet-rich plasma (PRP). PRP is a powerful autologous (from the patient’s body) substance that can be used in various parts of the body to speed healing, regenerate tissue and even improve your physical appearance (and restore your confidence). Keep reading to find out how PRP is used at the Langdon Center.
PRP Hair Restoration
If you’re affected by the most common type of hair loss (male or female pattern alopecia) and are longing for thicker, fuller hair but don’t want to go through surgery and a lengthy recovery period, PRP hair restoration is a great option. We recommend it to patients who are early on in their hair loss process as this treatment may not work as well once the hair loss has reached a more advanced stage.
During the treatment, one of our expert providers will draw blood from your arm into a glass tube and place it into a centrifuge. The centrifuge spins rapidly and will separate larger blood cells from the plasma and concentrate the platelets.
The purified PRP, with its rich concentration of platelets, will be injected into your scalp to stimulate hair growth. The PRP is effective at enabling more hairs to grow and add thickness to your existing hairs. Although hair restoration with PRP does not require any downtime, we’ll ask that you refrain from rigorous physical activity, including swimming, and avoid hair exposure to chemicals and dyes for 24 hours.

PRP Microneedling
Microneedling is a popular skin rejuvenation treatment that employs a special device to place tiny punctures into your skin. The punctures create micro-injuries that, as they heal, promote the production of collagen.
When microneedling is performed alone, it can improve the texture of your skin and diminish large pores, scars, fine lines, and other imperfections. Combined with PRP, microneedling can offer more dramatic results. Because PRP comes from your own body, it’s completely safe and natural. You can undergo PRP microneedling treatment without worrying about any significant adverse side effects.
Because PRP microneedling is a non-invasive treatment, you can return to work and your daily activities immediately after treatment. Although you may experience some redness, swelling, or red patches, these will fade away on their own after a few hours.
