Excess fat in the area under the chin (the sub-mental area)is difficult to improve through diet and exercise alone. This is one of the “problem areas” in which fat seems to persist even after achieving overall weight loss. Some people have under-the-chin throughout their lives, even if they are of normal body weight.
Kybella® is an FDA-approved treatment for excess fat in the sub-mental area that employs injection of deoxycholic acid to reduce the amount of fat underneath the chin. Deoxycholic acid is a natural detergent-like chemical that will dissolve fat cells. Over a period of four to six weeks after injection, fat cells are broken down and naturally removed.
Kybella works by destroying fat cells beneath the chin area so this area can’t store fat anymore. Between 20 and 30, and sometimes up to 50, distributedinjections are used under the chin. The medication then works gradually to kill fat cells, which are metabolized by the body over the following weeks.

The cost of Kybella depends on the number of treatments needed, your healthcare provider’s fees, as well as your geographic location. Most Kybella treatments cost between $1,200 and $1,800. You may receive up to 6 treatment sessions, spaced at least one month apart. Many patients experience visible results after 2 to 4 KYBELLA® treatments. In clinical studies, fifty-nine percent of patients received a total of 6 treatments.
The results of Kybella are permanent. Once they disappear, fat cells cannot return to the treated area. After reaching your desired aesthetic goals, further treatment is not expected. Although Kybella® results are permanent, they cannot prevent the enlargement of remaining fat cells if a patient gains weight.
