The Technique

By and large, tattoo removal via laser works by breaking and pulverizing pigment colors into smaller molecules with its high-intensity light energy. The black pigment absorbs light the easiest so tattoos made of black ink are the easiest to work on.

Depending on the color and size of your tattoo, the number of treatments needed to remove such will vary. At Dr. Langdon’s clinic, the procedure is achieved through a “Q-switched” laser which delivers extremely short bouts of laser into the intended area. The more intense the light absorbed by the particles, the faster they shatter into smaller particles.

Success Factors

Generally, there are 4 main factors which will influence the success of your tattoo removal through laser. They are the following:

1. the color of the light used during the procedure
2. laser light absorption by the pigment in relation to the surrounding skin
3. the length of each laser light’s pulse; each bout of light should be quite brief as longer than the usual pulse may cause scarring or burning
4. the amount of energy delivered per pulse; it should be enough to heat the pigment and cause pulverization

It usually requires 5 to 10 treatments at 4-6 weeks intervals for results to be fully achieved. It may also take some time for your immune system to clear the color’s fragments – it could take 1 to 3 years to be completely rid off.

3. You should expect for your tattoo to be lighter as each session progresses.
4. An ice pack will be provided post-procedure to soothe the affected area. Afterwards, a topical antibiotic will then be applied. Applying sufficient amounts of sunblock on the affected area is also important.
